The workshop

A few honest colours

Everyday Slovakia, printed in English.

Modrotlač, blueprint, is how Slovak dyers have decorated linen for centuries. A carved wooden block presses a resist paste onto white cloth, the cloth goes into the indigo vat, and where the paste was, the pattern stays white. In 2018 the craft was added to UNESCO's list of intangible heritage, together with Austria, Czechia, Germany and Hungary.

We liked the idea of a few honest colours and a clear pattern, so that is how we try to report: short stories about everyday Slovakia, each one checked against its sources and printed in plain English.

We cover culture, the outdoors, city life, science and sport. We leave out party politics, elections, courts and crime.

Slovak Indigo is published by Lakeshore Linden Media LLC, 148 George Blvd, Chicago, IL 60692, USA and funded by advertising, which is kept apart from the newsroom under our advertising policy.
